NEW — Omega Speedmaster Legend Collection — Schumacher

NEW — Omega Speedmaster Legend Collection — Schumacher [Mar 31, 2005 - 07:51 AM]

Since first becoming an Omega ambassador in 1995, Michael Schumacher has added five consecutive Formula 1 world championship drivers' titles to the two that he already had. Omega's designers produced special limited-edition Speedmaster chronographs in celebration of each of these titles, with their own distinctive sporty design. Now, with no records left to break and an inconceivable eighth world championship title on the horizon, Schumi's watch brand of choice also seeks to surpass its own previous levels of achievement with the launch of not just one special watch, but a whole collection.

The Legend Collection consists of three Speedmaster chronographs that combine Omega's high-end column-wheel chronograph movement with sporty Formula 1-inspired dials. Each model has a 42mm diameter stainless-steel case with the familiar curved Speedmaster stainless-steel bracelet and safety clasp. Sealed between the scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal and the screw-in case back is the exclusive Omega caliber 3301 self-winding chronograph movement. It is an officially certified COSC chronometer and has a power reserve of 55 hours.

The three models are distinguished by their highly individual dials, all of which have an applied Omega symbol at 12 o'clock and 12 applied rhodium-plated applied hour markers with luminous dots : the first model has a black dial with silver subdials and a silver exterior hour circle with black minute scale and red Speedmaster name; the second a silver dial with two-tone silver subdials with black outer zones and a black exterior hour circle with white minute scale and red Speedmaster name;

the last model has a red dial with black subdials, black hour circle and white minute scale and black Speedmaster name. The former model has a tachymeter scale engraved on a black aluminium ring on the stainless-steel bezel, whereas the latter two have it engraved in black directly on the brushed stainless-steel bezel. All three models have a white-on-black date window at 6 o'clock and baton hour and minute hands with an arrowhead central chronograph seconds hand - all with luminous SuperLuminova inserts.

 Thanks.

 Jorge.

Thanks Jorge as always for your reports...

My take?

I like them (not thrilled about the movement - big surprise!) and boy are the Rolex guys going to scream about them emulating certain vintage Daytona's!

Everyone knows my concerns about the c.33xx movements, so I don't need to re-trace that. I like the looks, the subdial's are very nice, and Omega's left themselves a variation they can use next year if MS wins another F1 World Championship: Red dial w/White Sub's...

Thanks again Jorge for your continued postings of news from Basel!

Hey, Chuck. I've bought one of the Red Legends and it's absolutely beautiful. I discovered your blog just after I'd ordered and I'm waiting nervously to find out if mine is one of the lemons. My question: is it a limited edition or not? There's considerable disagreement about this and my watch does not have the "Limited Edition" engraving that shows clearly on eBay ads for the other Schumacher legends. What do you think?

Keep up the good work,

Congratulations on your Red Legend.

Whoops!

and I'm waiting nervously to find out if mine is one of the lemons.

Well, the Legends use the newer version of the movement that has had numerious problems. And a couple of the Limited Edition Legends (the one with 1234/6000 engraved on the back, for example) have been reported to have failed, but I have not heard of any problems with the newer "Unnumbered" editions of the Legend. At least none so far.

My question: is it a limited edition or not?

The three newer one's are not "Limited" or at least not Numbered editions. They could be "Special" or unnumbered editions, and I wouldn't count on them remaining in the product line for a very long time.

There's considerable disagreement about this and my watch does not have the "Limited Edition" engraving that shows clearly on eBay ads for the other Schumacher legends. What do you think?

I sent you an email with more details, hopefully it will clear things up for you.

Keep up the good work,

I'll try!

Cheers!

Chuck,

The red Legend makes an appearance in the Casino Royale movie, if only briefly. The 'dealer' at the casino is wearing one. Its red face was unmistakable.

I've noted that the Legend series of Speedmasters have an elevated price point relative to other Speedmasters. What is the justification for this? Is it the movement, or the Schumacher connection? I'm beginning to come around to the looks of the watch. Is their price point a fair reflection of their value within the Omega line?

Thanks

How're ya doin', Chuck? I thought I'd follow up my November correspondence about the Speedmaster Legend by telling you that mine keeps time TO THE SECOND. It is more accurate than my quartz Avia, and it seems to make no difference whether it's on or off my wrist. I have a Fortis B42 Chronograph which loses as soon as I take it off. Just thought you might be interested...............

Bye for now!

Hiya Bill!

Bit of a headache this morning...

[Aside: Met up with an old friend yesterday, we noticed the local CompUSA was going out and had everything on sale... He ended up buying a new 24" iMac and it was 2am before I got home from watching/helping him explore his new machine. Even with daylight savings time, that sun rose too early for me this morning!]

I thought I'd follow up my November correspondence about the Speedmaster Legend by telling you that mine keeps time TO THE SECOND.

To be frank, I'd be surprised if someone reported less than good timekeeping with the FP based Omega's... That the c.33xx's keep good time even if it has problems with the chronograph portions (as long as the movement isn't totally jammed) has been pretty much a constant.

It is more accurate than my quartz Avia, and it seems to make no difference whether it's on or off my wrist.

I'm not familiar with the Avia, but again, I'm not surprised.

I have a Fortis B42 Chronograph which loses as soon as I take it off.

Which flavor of the B42? My B42 has been keeping excellent time. But then again I might have a different model (I have the 5100 LE).

Just thought you might be interested...............

Sure, glad to hear it!

And I do look forward to the day when we don't have anything other than positive things to say about the c.33xx's.

I had an IM Chat with Keith Downing last week... [An aside: he's doing fine, so are Marnee and the kids. They are in the process of moving back to S. California, hope to be there by the end of April if not sooner.]

Unfortunately, Keith had this to report:

archidaddy: I looked at a PO Chrono in the local Ben Bridge
a few weeks ago

archidaddy: 3313

Chuck Maddox: And? [thinking maybe he bought it]

archidaddy: minute hand didn't reset

Chuck Maddox: Big from what I remember..

archidaddy: minute totallizer

Chuck Maddox: You're kidding?

archidaddy: no

Chuck Maddox: Sigh...

Keith said Ben Bridge (to their credit) pulled the watch from their display and was going to send it back to Omega.

I am disappointed this problem has cropped up with a PO Chronograph... Up until Keith's report, the POC's were one of the product lines (along with the AT Chrono's and the Railmaster Chrono) that had no reported problems, and I was pleased to be able to say that. The minute counter failure is behaviour #1 from Shaun Thornton's summary of Omega service bulletins from 9 March 2007, and it would seem that while the remedy reduces the frequency of reported problems, it does not seem to have eliminated them.

Bye for now!

Best of fortune with your newer pattern Legend Bill!

Chuck - I think my Fortis B42 is the 7750 model. It's a big, chunky watch and I love it, but it's not up with the accuracy of the Speedmaster Legend.

Thanks Chuck for all your sound advice regarding the speedmasters.
I'm interested in the Speddy Schumacher Legends....I have 2 questions I'd like your thoughts about. I am aware you don't own any pieces with the 33xx. Anyway If you were to get a schumacher legend, would you go for the the Ltd edition of 6000 model from 2004, or one from the 'legend range? I have been offered good examples of both types for roughly same price. (if legend range, which would you consider the most desirable pattern for the future?) Thanks

Eh, I try...

Sounds like you're not likely to take my advice though...

Not yet anyway.

Anyway If you were to get a schumacher legend,

I'm not likely to get one...

would you go for the the Ltd edition of 6000 model from 2004, or one from the 'legend range?

Well, I suppose that since the newer examples seem to have fewer problems than the earlier models it might make more sense to get as new of an example as one could possibly obtain.

I still think it's a bit like asking if one wants to be shot at with a .45 ACP or a .45 Auto-Rim cartridge, in the end it won't make much difference if you're hit.

I have been offered good examples of both types for roughly same price. (if legend range, which would you consider the most desirable pattern for the future?) Thanks

Generally, numbered limited editions fetch more money on resale than unnumbered general production models, GENERALLY. There may be reason to believe the newer models suffer from fewer problems than the earler models though.

Personally, I'd choose a watch with a different base movement, but you'll choose what best suits you.

Bonjour, Chuck. Despite my earlier messages re my Schumacher Red Legend, I can no longer cope with the bracelet. As on all Speedmaster models I've seen, there are a miserable two adjustment holes.

I can put in another link and have the damn watch slide down to my elbow, or I can leave it as it is and let my hand go blue. This is unacceptable on a tick tock worth two grand in Limey money. How do you find the bracelets on your many Speedmasters?

The Legend bracelet is beautiful but impractical. Those on my Rolex Submariner and my Fortis B-42 are fully adjustable, though the Rolex is sharp and nasty on the edges, but I'll take those two against the Speedmaster any time. I was considering a superb looking co-axial chronometer (3581.30) but have abandoned the idea. Bye bye, Omega.

Well, Bill. I have to agree with you about the lack of adjustment on the Speedmaster bracelets. You're quite right that this aspect of many of the Omega range is disappointing in products costing so much. Rolex bracelets are sharp and, to be blunt about it (get the joke?) have not been updated in more than 30 years - or is it 40, but at least you can adjust the damn things.

Yours,

Bill

Chuck-a-Luck! How ya doing, fella? Just wanted to add to my comments in March about the comparative accuracy of the Speedmaster Legend and my Fortis B-42 Official Cosmonaut's Chronograph.

Since writing, something curious has happened. The Legend, still not a year old, has gradually speeded up and is now gaining 4-5 secs a day.

The Fortis has settled down and is losing a second a day. Not bad at all, and the Fortis looks and feels so much stronger and more solid than the Schumacher. So there! I'm taking the Legend out into the woods to blast it with a load of number 4 buckshot!

Answer to this part...

Picture of this watch here: http://www.omega.ch/fileadmin/templates/omega-watches/img-watchesbig/32130445001001.gif

The information on Omega's site is correct. This watch uses the F. Piguet movement which has had such a horrible owner experience for reliability, dependability and repairs. Aside from that, I'm not a big fan of them deleting the functional and useful Tachy Bezel for a scoreboard of Michael Schumacher's F1 conquests, I think the dial is overly busy and flashy, and it's probably a pass for anyone other than a big Michael Schumacher fan or a Speedmaster complete-ist.

Picture of the "Big 1" watch here: http://www.old-omegas.com/pics/schuey/2001-2.jpg

Ok, the "Big 1" Schumacher is an entirely different beast... It's powered by the older, more common, more tested and far more reliable Valjoux 7750 based movement. While I'm not a big fan of Carbon Fibre dials [I find they make the dial very busy and sometimes difficult to read], this is a choice much closer to my tastes and it's far more reliable movement in it, in my opinion.

Again, eMail me if you'd like an AD referral.

Good Hunting!
